Description
This artwork combines Japanese calligraphy and sumi-e painting, inspired by a verse from the Manyoshu (the oldest existing collection of Japanese poetry):
 
〈Original Haiku (Japanese)〉
　ひさかたの あまのつゆしも おきにけり
　いへなる人まち こひぬらむ
　— 大伴坂上郎女　万葉集 
 
〈Translation (English)〉
　“Dew from the heavens are falling.
　My loved ones at home will be waiting for me.”
　— Ōtomo no Sakanoe no Iratsume  Manyoshu
 
In this work, the poem is written in hentaigana (variant kana), likened to the delicate traces of morning dew settling upon leaves.
The fragility and preciousness of dew, gifted from the heavens, overlaps with the miracle of meeting a beloved.
The calligraphy and sumi-e together condense this sacred encounter, capturing the fleeting beauty of a single moment.
